So I do enjoy watching shows like Preppers because it shows you some interesting people and being prepared in never a bad idea. Even if what they are prepping for never happens in their lifetime, they are still more set up to deal with regular events that DO HAPPEN on a yearly basis like hurricanes.
I know the hurricanes last fall took out a lot of people and some are still working on making their way back to normal and some prepper things would not have helped them but several would have. Having a good water supply is critical and the hurricanes really showed that. You can always purify rain water that you have in your catchment as long as you didn’t collect it off your roof or gutters and your container is very clean. And really if you do catchment off the roof, you can always use that water to flush the toilets if your water is turned off or to shower — it is not ideal but better than staying dirty.
I was watching TV today and some apartment building in Atlanta had their water turned off because their sewer is plugged so the EPA and Water Authority shut off the water to prevent more contamination. Well, there is a perfect example. Obviously living in an apartment you are limited but you should always have some water. It just takes a big storm here in Atlanta to see a run on water and Florida is even worse. Why are you waiting for a storm? Unless you are on a very limited budget or don’t have a couple feet of storage space, you should always have some water at home. Just rotate it out once in a while.
But bottled water is NOT the thing you are probably missing. What is your plan for longer term? How will you clean water, catch water? Do you have anything to purify water with? Your prepper kit as well as your hurricane kit needs to contain a gallon of bleach. Yes, you can do more if you have the space but you should not be evacuating for a hurricane without water and a gallon of bleach. Bleach can be used for water purification and disinfecting and cleaning. People don’t use it so much anymore because we don’t wear 14 pounds of undergarments like they did in the 1950s and 1960s and men don’t wear suits and undershirts like they used to. A lot of us don’t even have it in the house since it is toxic and dangerous for children and we rarely use it but if you are a prepper or you are getting an emergency kit together, you probably want to consider some bleach 🙂
